September Update from DHS Administration
Friday, September 9, 2016
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy Friday! We are in our fourth week of school already and as we start to hit our stride, I wanted to take a moment and introduce our admin team as well as share some information.
This is my 13th year at DHS and first year as principal. It is an honor to be in this role and I am grateful daily to be a GAEL. I love this school and community and am happy to work in such an amazing environment. Our admin team is made up of Kara Holthe (4th year), Paul Faris (2nd year), Lenni Velez (11th year at DHS, first as Admin) and Krista Taylor who joins us from Newark Unified where she was an administrator for 3 years.
Our theme for the year is the 3 Cs: Communication, Consistency and Community.
We want to be mindful in developing each of these as we work with the entire school community. As a team, we are committed to the students at Dublin High. We met over the summer to define who we are as a team and to identify our core values. The document on the next page outlines our commitments to your students, our staff and our families. We want to partner with you on the emotional and academic well being of your students. To that end we want to share some upcoming events:
Homecoming: Next week is Homecoming Week. For those new to Dublin High, we “do” Homecoming like no other! We hope that your students enjoy a wonderful week full of activities and friendly class rivalries. Our skit night is Wednesday, September 14th and that is our first NO HOMEWORK NIGHT for the year. Students will not be assigned homework and will not have tests the day after. We want our students to enjoy the event without worrying about homework. Please enjoy our parade, Carnival and homecoming game on Friday. We would love to see the community come out!
Helping Your Child Excel: Dr. Denise Pope will be speaking on Monday, Sept 26th at 6:45 p.m. in our Center for Performing Arts and Education. Dr. Pope is a Senior Lecturer at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education. She founded the Challenge Success, a non profit organization dedicated to student health and engagement with learning. Please join us as she speaks to us about how we can help our students navigate the pressures of high school life. CLICK HERE to download the flyer.
No Homework Nights: As a staff we have been examining the role and purpose of homework in our students’ lives. We are working to ensure homework is meaningful and relates to student learning. We have also committed to Quarterly No Homework Nights during the year. We are in the process of deciding the dates and will be advertising once they are scheduled. We hope your student uses this time to relax and enjoy family time.
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend. As always, it is a great time to be a GAEL!
